Sean,

My experience has all been home. They didn't allow those make your wine stores here until just very recently.

Guinness,

Well there is something to be said to being able to make the wine you like the way you like it.

MFD,

Interesting. Your cooking must taste great. I remember an old saying with making a recipe, when in doubt add booze. *grin*

for my house wine making was a necessity. Most of my mother's recipes called for wine in some form or fashion and I don't think the flavor would have been the same with store bought wine.

My mother and her friends were huge into winemaking when I was a kid. We grew up with demijohns (sp?) of the stuff wrapped up in blankets and towels next to the water heater making the house smell of yeast. They didn't use the "red wine kit" type stuff though, they made wine from elderberries, potatoes, grapes, you name it. I'm not much of a wine drinker to put it mildly (as my nickname might suggest), but Ontario wine is pretty awful so I can see the advantages of going homebrew if that's the alternative.

Seeing as though the cheapest bottle I've found at the LCBO that I actually really like is still $7.50... I'm really looking forward to attempting this in the future!

Have you had any experience with doing it all at home vs. one of those make-your-own wine stores?
